shiny moments of the week

one of my major flaws is that i tend to lose steam once i start something, as evident from my lack of posting for the past week! my peace offering to you is a monster-size shiny moments post:

1. in regards to a charge against a man for wearing his pants too low, judge ruben franco threw out the charge, saying "the constitution still leaves some opportunity for people to be foolish if they so desire." thank you for the permission.

2. it's been a rough week for snooki. after being ripped apart in this new york times article, obama pretends not to know who she is on "the view," despite making a joke about her a few weeks ago at the white house correspondents' dinner:

"This next provision is called the Jersey Shore-Up. It reads: 'The following individuals shall be excluded from the indoor tanning tax within this bill.' Snooki, J-WOWW, the Situation, and House Minority Leader John Boehner."

obama might soon have a situation on his hands.

3. i finally saw inception and was blown away. visual effects were stunning--and i'm not talking about the cinematography. leo dicaprio, joseph gordon-levitt, and tom hardy oh my!

leo--brooding and broken. joseph gordon-levitt--sexy geek. tom hardy--bad assssssss.

this was the first movie i've seen with tom hardy and all i can do is drool.

i am also weirdly turned on by this: when asked if he's ever had sexual relations with men, tom hardy responded
"Of course I have. I'm an actor for fuck's sake."

what a bad ass. a sexy, sexy bad ass.

4. a friend introduced me to dear girls above me which chronicles the dumb things that the girls who live above the author say

Charlie covering his ears
here are my three favorite posts:

Dear Girls Above Me,
“My version of white water rafting is to down a bottle of chardonnay.” My version of white water rafting is white water rafting

Dear Girls Above Me,
“No! The ‘which Sex and the City girl are you’ survey said I’m Samantha. I’m so a Carrie!” Don’t beat yourself up, I got Miranda.

Dear Girls Above Me,
No you can’t go on The Biggest Loser wearing a fat suit & win by “popping the suit during weigh-in.”

i may or may not have thought these things too.

maybe he just wanted to cuddle.

6. the return of project runway...

7. ...and the jersey shore

8. bucknell (my school!) was named the third in salary potential among liberal arts schools by payscale

good to know.

9. eric northman looking dead sexy (that's a pun!) in this week's true blood in that baby blue sweater. for my favorite moment, where eric tells sookie to shut up and grabs her mouth (you could cut the sexual tension with a stake!), watch the first few seconds of this video of show creator alan ball recapping the episode.

i NEED more of this--and for it to be real this time!

i just can't get enough of alexander skarsgard (especially in the low v-necks he frequently sports as eric northman). i have had a soft spot for him since he was in gaga's paparazzi video, her first with jonas akerlund

i also recently discovered that skarsgard was meekus in zoolander
earth to whom it may concern: a message from balls models.

10. i posted a question about the new york times article, "the web means the end of forgetting," about facebook and privacy issues on the bits blog and it was answered! see my question answered here. my pseudonym is "class of 2011"

boring, unclever title designed for google optimization

two time pulitzer prize winner gene weingarten's got beef with the "new newsroom," pointing out the loss of the art of headline creation in his article "gene weingarten article mentions lady gaga." whereas print article titles remain clever, online publications now use titles that are designed for search engine optimization. he writes:

the only really creative opportunity copy editors had was writing headlines, and they took it seriously. this gave the american press some brilliant and memorable moments, including this one, when the senate failed to convict president clinton: "close but no cigar;" and this one, when a meteor missed earth: "kiss your asteroid goodbye." there were also memorably wonderful flops, like the famous one on a food story about home canning: "you can put pickles up yourself."

...putting well-known names in headlines is considered shrewd, even if creativity suffers. early this year, the print edition of the post had this great headline on a story about conan o'brien's decision to quit rather than accept a later time slot: "better never than late." online, it was changed to "conan o'brien won't give up 'tonight show' time slot to make room for jay leno."

i have to take his side on this one. one of my favorite part of blogging is creating a witty title! "lowest of the lo" is my favorite so far!

thinking inside the box

3533841083_e9b04e34ff_z_large

starting this friday, art.party.theater.company is sponsoring the presence of a mysterious 8-by-8-foot shiny box that contains a celebrity! the box will be located in bryant park from 6:30-8:30 pm every friday through august 13. artistic director mary birnbaum hints, "it's somebody probably everybody knows and someone that probably everybody likes."

i wonder who it will be!

as if!

i caught clueless on hbo yesterday which rekindled my love for cher horowitz. she was my first fashion icon--i had a cher barbie doll and i imagined myself leading her life with her closet at my disposal. i truly do see a bit of myself in her. here are some of my favorite cher quotes:

he does dress better than i do, what would i bring to the relationship?

until mankind is peaceful enough not to have violence on the news, there's no point in taking it out of shows that need it for entertainment value.

do you prefer "fashion victim" or "ensembly challenged?"

this is where dionne lives. she's my friend because we both know what it's like for people to be jealous of us.

it's like that book i read in the 9th grade that said "'tis a far far better thing doing stuff for other people."

who was your first fashion icon?

shiny moments of the week

1. gaga's reaction to picketers from the westboro baptist church outside her st. louis show:

"At the risk of drawing attention to a hateful organization, I would like to make my little monster fan aware of a protest being held outside the Monsterball in St.Louis tonight. Although we have had protesters before, as well as fundamentalists at the show this group of protesters are hate criminals and preach using lude and violent language and imagery that I wish I protect you all from. Their message is of hatred and divisiveness, but inside at the Monsterball we preach love and unity. My request to all little monsters and public authority is to pay these hate criminals no mind. Do not interact with them, or try to fight. Do not respond to any of their provocation. Don't waste your words, or feelings, no matter what you hear or see. You are more fortunate and blessed than they are, and in your heart just pray for them. Although I respect and do not judge anyone for their personal views on any politics or religion, this group in particular to me, is violent and dangerous. I wanted to make my fans aware of my views on how to approach, or rather not approach, these kinds of hate activists. Be inspired to ignore their ignorant message, and feel gratitude in your heart that you are not burdened or addicted to hate, as they are."

praise gaga.

2. fashion's night out will be factored into two episodes of "gossip girl" next season, featuring cameos of Voguers Hamish Bowles and Lauren Santo Domingo. this fabulousness comes your way in september.

3. the trailer for the social network, aka "the facebook movie." i am fandango-ing from now.

4. inception, the only movie worth seeing this summer, finally comes out

5. diane von frustenberg (one of my favorite designers) is designing 20 rooms for claridge's in london

phenomenal.

is it ever possible to grow apart together?

ifc films presents...
...a film by daryl wein

although their four year relationship has gone stale, new yorkers daryl and zoe are not yet ready to say goodbye and instead decide to embark on a modified break up, divvying up everything from their time spent together to city parks and whole foods. this proves to be a tougher struggle than both had originally anticipated as they try to decide which way the pendulum of their relationship should swing. based on an actual experiment devised by director/actor daryn wein and actress zoe lister-jones, the film loosely interprets a year in their lives battling codependency and exploring alternatives to monogamy.

thanks to ifc theatre on demand, i was granted the privilege of seeing this film. it is charming, poignant, and hauntingly realistic. i laughed. i cried. i loved it.

it is particularly relevant to my life as i have just ended a quite similar arrangement with a boyfriend of nearly 3 years. it seems counterintuitive to spend time apart in order to determine if you'd like to continue to spend time together, but i found it to be very helpful. although, every time i had to explain my situation--"we're on a break"--i couldn't help but think of ross from friends.

[we were on a break!]

what is your opinion on breaks versus break ups?

fashion police: neighborhood watch

yearning for the expertise of tim gunn? stacy and clinton? go try it on! it's your next best bet! upload a photo of yourself donned in your outfit of question, survey the community, and voilà! you have an honest opinion on the shoes you were questioning for your sister's wedding or on the dress you might wear on your third date. you can make it work, even without tim gunn!

my best friend (and college roommate for 3 years now!) mackenzie at design darling was gracious enough to assist me on my quest for nude pumps. in the spirit of go try it on, i would love to hear your opinion! check out the options she's discovered and let me know what i should do! thanks for all the love!

shiny moments of the week

a recap of the week's glittering highlights

1. little monsters conquer NYC
[mother monster outside madison square gaga]
this was a spectacle that was oh-so-fabulous and everything i wanted and more, including being spotted on the street and mistaken for gaga!

2. karl lagerfeld has the heart of a lion
lagerfeld defined opulence in the chanel couture show with this gigantic golden lion, whose paw rested on a globe from which the models entered. fierce.

3. kanye sports egyptian bling bling
Kanye West
mr. west visited the exhibition the tutankhamun and the golden age of the pharaoahs at discovery times square exposition. maybe the boy king inspired kanye's new song "power?"

4. givenchy couture show--dramatic and decadent

ostrich feathers, crystals, gold plating, delicate lace, leather--i literally could not ask for anything more! riccardo tischi opted out of a traditional show and instead intimately showcased his collection. with frida kahlo and her obsession with religion, sensuality, and the human anatomy (she suffered a lifelong battle with spinal pain) as his inspiration, tischi described his collection as "a romantic way to see death."

5. titanic 3d spring 2012
james cameron announced titanic would be rereleased in 3d in april 2012, the 100th year anniversary of the ship's sinking. i cannot wait to relive this moment in 3d!

what were your shiny moments this past week?
